Hello Families of Ms. Gahan's 6th Grade students for the 2018-2019 school year!

Week of January 21
Monday, students have grade repair, reading plus, and independent reading time. Students write a summary of the Outsiders - some for extra credit, some to replace the zero they have for the fiction summary for the quarter. Last week, we solidified our thematic analysis outlines. This week we expand one of the sections into a theme-based paragraph. Transitional phrases and their use will be taught this week with the Outsiders summary. Students turn in scene 1 for the playwrights project.
Week of January 28
Students take the insight reading test, and review playwrights scene 2 contents and format. Students have three hours to complete the thematic paragraph based on the Outsiders. This week we watch the Outsiders complete novel version of the Francis Ford Coppola film.
Week of February 4
Begin Research /Utopia Unit. Students copy WEEK 1 Model, as exemplar of work expectations for this unit. Playwrights project Scene 2. Lesson on using text features. Students read independently for the reading log due next week, and also do reading plus.
Week of February 11
Reading Log 5 Due. Reading Log 6 due March 11, 2019. Students make suggested revisions to playwrights scene 1. Complete and review Noun Activities #1 and Punctuation: Commas With Introductory Words and Nouns of Address.
Week of February 19
Playwrights: Complete Scene 2 - Work on Scene 3. Review Noun activities. Complete Week 2 - Utopia Group work (Name/Motto/Logo)
Week of February 25
Students work on Playwrights scene 3. They receive critique, and implement changes to scene 2. Finish entire play, edit/revise and turn in. Students complete Week 2 - Utopia Name/Motto/Logo - individual work.
Week of March 4
Students edit each other's complete plays. Students are given an hour to complete weekly reading plus see-readers, and prepare reading log 6 for turn in on Monday. Noun Activity 2 - Singular and Plural Noun work was done to improve sentence construction and spelling. Utopia Group Work Week 2a - Renewable Energy. Playwrights Project - implement editing changes to all three scenes of plays. Prepare for final submission on 3/15.
Week of March 11
Reading Log 6 is due - Reading Log 7 will be due on 4/8/19. Playwrights final production performances happen all day in the PAC on Monday the 11th. Students have time to work in independent reading and the reading log, and reading plus, as well as time to finalize their plays for final turn in on March 15. We review Singular and Plural noun activities, and do Utopia Week 3 - Location. Students use the Brittanica site, and research locations, to share with their groups and choose from.
Week of March 18
Students write a cover letter in order to prepare to enter the California Young Playwrights Contest for the 2018-2019 school year. Time is given for independent reading for the log, and reading plus. Students complete two common and proper noun activities in or quest for better sentences. Students begin creating their Google slide shows to accompany their Utopia Presentations. Students complete Week 4 Utopia group work.
Week of April 1
California Young Playwrights Contest for the 2018-2019 school year.Playwrights project is wrapping up! Today we have a class discussion to determine pros and cons of participation. Week of April 8
Select plays and parts of plays are performed in the Black Box Theater on Monday. Students have 1.5 hours to work on Reading Logs and Reading Plus see-readers. Students take a test to prepare for the upcoming standardized tests. Students complete Utopia Week 5 Group Work.

Week of April 15
Last Playwrights class is this week, with performances in our classroom. We begin reading The Giver aloud for fun, and practice listening. Students work with punctuation: Apostrophes with possessive nouns and contractions. We write thank you letters to <s Salzer, our playwright, and watch some 8th grade skits from Learning Through the Arts in the Performing Arts Center.
Week of April 22
We read more of The Giver, and introduce our fourth unit, even though we have not completed the third. Students analyze test questions to prepare for end of the year tests. Students work with commas and conjunctions in compound sentences. Students complete week 6 Utopia Group work.
